ABOUT THE BAND
Pepperpot was formed in the summer of 1982 when Brian Lyons and Darin Bell struck up a friendship through the love of music. They were both educated in Arbroath and brian, who had been playing the accordion from the age of 10, began performing in the local pubs at only 14 years of age. At 17 he had secured a regular Friday night spot in the ship inn down near the harbour in Arbroath. It was here that darin joined brian for a song one night before, as usual, they would head up to the windmill disco. Where all the young folk of the town would partake in a few shandies… From this They decided to rehearse and learn a few songs. This flourished into regular practice sessions and ultimately gigs in the ship, the angus bar, the windmill lounge bar and the lobster pot in auchmithie.
The helter skelter, rollercoaster ride to boyband stardom was now in full flight!! How cool were they performing such cutting edge hits as “puff the magic dragon” and “morningtown ride”with the full orchestral backing of brian’s squeeze box! As time passed and more songs were added to the ever growing repertoire, darin picked up a few chords the guitar to compliment brian’s accordion playing. A drum machine was added and bookings were on the ascendance.
Their outgoing personalities more than compensated for their mediocre musicianship and so their popularity grew. As years passed they continually put a lot of time and effort into the band whilst investing their earnings into upgrading musical equipment and embraced the available technology on offer which enabled them to programme bass, drums etc giving them a full band sound from only two musicians. In more recent times they’ve added a vast array of lighting effects and regularly add to their repertoire.
33 years later the two same teenagers with big dreams may not have become household names around the world but have built up a very successful business whilst doing the thing they love best……….. Entertaining.
They have performed over the length and breadth of the uk and Ireland and Over the years have also appeared alongside such artistes as the late great andy stewart, the Alexander brothers, the average white band, mick foster of foster and allen and various top comedians and caberet acts.
Brian say "At the end of the day this is a job like any other with good and bad points, highs and lows", but both agree that they are so lucky to be able to do something they love for a living and to have met so many lovely people and seen so many beautiful places over the years on their travels.
